the turning point - cont'd 2

Things does not always come out that you'd expect it to be and we all know that.

I took the risk to bet and wait for the result from the company I like, but I didn't get it.

However, I don't feel extremely disappointed or sad because I knew the chances were thin: it is a big company, I was fucking late for the interview, and I was nervous during the interview although it was my 5th interview! wtf (5th nervousness came after 4 interviews, something is wrong with me).

I realized however, I didn't really know what I want in a job, or even to the basic: what I want for a job and that is very crucial to secure one for yourself. There is no leisure in holding offers until you can get a better one, so what you can do for a better offer is reject and wait for a better one.

I can't say I didn't regret that I rejected two job offers. But yeah, sulking creates nothing. What's done is done, what happened has happened.

I gotta be positive thinking

This simply means, my choices are now open again. Now job search continues

Positive thinking

"Okay, I gotta be positive thinking"

This is a very redundant statement because we only say that due to our tendency for pessimistic or negative point of views.
However though, it might be the only recourse to our whatever deep shit situation that we are in, so that we don't stop trying.

I gotta be positive thinking

knowledge

It makes me ponder, do we seek knowledge because they have genuine passion for it?
or do we seek knowledge because we bear a sense of inferiority if they lack it?
or do we do so because we have the need for achievement?

I classify myself as the second type.

My idealism is that it is only justifiable for humans to seek knowledge because of the authentic passion and I am not fit for that. I shall continue to seek because I will always feel inferior to people who seek on passion or people who bear more knowledge than me (assuming it as measurable).

the turning point - cont'd

"Beggars can't be choosers?"

I know I am in deep-shit-need of money and job to pay my tuition fee loan, rent and to eat. But I refuse to fall out of that. My choice of my career path shall not be based on the job offers which were given to me, but will be on the offers which not only were given to me but also which I want to be given to me.

It actually sucks to reject a job offer, or two.

This time the first job offer that I rejected is because I am betting on the other three interviews with pending results. It's all about the risk: it can be a better job, it can be worse job, or it can be no job at all and then I will be all back to square one again. After the considerations, If you refer to previous post, I realized that I like the second company better and I would be really glad if I were to be admitted there. There is no guarantee that I will be accepted into there but it is what taking risk is all about.

The second job offer that I rejected was a recommendation from my previous advisor. I might not be interested in this career path, it is as simple as that.

Quoted from Confucius"choose a job you like and you will never have to work a day in your life". and I believe that there are so many similar quotes.

On this, it is of course all common sense that we should look for a job we like. I do agree that we might not find a job as fun as we thought it was gonna be, and a job that we do not like might not be that bad. But, probably Confucius is not entirely right? Whether you have to choose the job that you think that is going to be enjoyable or whether it is actually up to you to try to have a positive thinking and enjoy whatever job you are given?

Since we might not simply find out that the job's gonna be fun or not from the description of the job, neither do I know what I really really want with limited job opportunities due to my qualification, nor am I sure that I will be able to live up to that positive thinking to enjoy the job despite the whatever nature it is going to be; several factors that affect me on choosing the offers will be: The prospects for future career growth, the experience to be expected, remuneration, overseas placement opportunities and the office environment.

Now it's come to the stage where I will wait for the interview results, and keep looking for more jobs just in case if I am not to be awarded with the job.

Wish me luck people.

the turning point

This is probably one of the most crucial turning point of my life.
My decision to my first job. The choices are:

LHN Group (http://www.lhngroup.com.sg/en/):

  • Gone thru 2nd interview with the Managing Director. He said he is willing to accept me to the team but he will only make the offer if I am ready to respond immediately. I told him to hold for a week since I will be attending other interviews. salary not disclosed
  • Offered salary 2400
  • SME company, probably a good chance to learn lots, but probably no chance to go overseas at all. Different job path.
  • office staff profile 80%-90% below 30 years old (younger generations)
  • The job will be a property manager: where I have to settle matters on maintenance, liaise with subcons, maintain good rapport with tenant etc.

DP Architects (DP Consultants) (http://www.dpa.com.sg/)

  • (look at the portfolio!!!: Singapore Flyer, RWS, Esplanade, Bugis Junction, new Sports Hub, Senayan City, Dubai Mall, Vivocity)
  • Standard interview and responses, results in a week, not to be too optimistic.
  • A nice senior and a great office.
  • Chances to work directly with architects *WOW* but people inside the office might not be the nicest on earth. But I kinda like the place and it might be just right for me. I will know how Architects work and will give me new insights in case if I want to study again and apply for my dream course, yes: Architecture.
  • The job will be a QS (consultant): help in drafting Architect Instruction and Directions, coordinate the projects, understanding and advising to the Architects (probably settle claims too). (might be much slacker thank maincon)

M+W Group (http://www.mwgroup.net/)

  • Very Big MNC company with a lot of foreigners (read angmohs esp Germans or Austrians) inside.
  • Not a brilliant interview though.
  • Not very optimistic for the result of the interview but might be a good place if I am willing to work hard.
  • But there are chances for overseas placement, the salary might be higher than normal main cons. the interview was last week. and very near to home.
  • The job will be QS (main con): measurement, bills of quantities, backcharges, claims, quotations, etc.

Hor Kew Corporation (http://www.horkew.com.sg/)

  • A very local construction firm with very local practice.
  •  People are quite quiet but probably quite nice. The location is around Sungei Kadut (near Kranji area, means quite far).
  • since the practice is quite local, there aren't much delegation of jobscope to different departments and the QS pretty much do everything required and first few month will me a lot of measurement.
  • Interview was standard but not to get my hopes too high either.
  • The job will be QS (main con) but only 5 days a week!! but it much more things to do than normal QSes!

What's holding me and distressing me right now is that I need to respond to my first company fast but the possibility of different good prospects in the rest of the companies, despite the certainty of me getting in there, is a headache to me.
No matter what I pick will be very crucial to path my way. It's probably because I do not know what I really want. A little help over here? Do I just take the most tangible one or do I bet on the prospective results?

Friendship Fades

I know I have ideals and I force people to see from my point of view, this time I would like to do the same but I will do it the right way.

Teddy once said,

We didn't even bother to visit those people who stayed in RVR, although we were still staying in NUS premises, so what about after we are living far from each other?

I also remember once Mike said

In the future, after I'm married I will ask my wife to befriend yours (ours) so all of us can have reason to gather afterwards.

Bearing those in my mind always, I made effort to visit those who stayed probably 20-25 minute of walk away from my place, yes although it's quite near but if you don't bother to visit them and if they bear the same mindset we won't be visiting each other. I too, have at least gone to those whose place is at bukit timah which is not so far away either who appeared to be the ex-RVR group (or better known as the supper club people). Sometimes I also pay a visit to the friends who are still at NUS.

Again, bearing the same statements, yesterday for the sake of catching up or whatever you call it, I organized a supper outing. The attendance was not the best but that's the least of effort that we could have done in order to maintain a good relation.

For me, I've decided that it's quality over quantity. It's sad for me to see, that some people are much more excited to see freshmen rather than their friends yesterday.
It's also rather disappointing to also see that those words that I bear in mind speaks louder than the actions of their speakers themselves.

I can't say much more thing, friendship fades and it is natural, and if we don't want that to happen, it's up to us.

Balls

A new label: Daddy.
Means wise words or advices from my dad.
He called me yesterday to ask about me and told me not to be over-stressed with the job search, then he said this (although probably it's from other sources but I like this):

These three things are like glass balls: Health, Friends and Family
once they drop, they will break so it's really hard to put them back together again

Meanwhile, Money and Career are like rubber ball
once they drop, it can bounce back unpredictably (might be high might be low, we can't control it anyways, but one thing for sure it wont shatter like glass balls) so it doesn't really matter

Thus using that my dad asked me to put more emphasis on friendship rather than putting too much focus on the job search. You know, just take a break or something but yeah I did, not so much though.
