Recently I was playing my fave Suikoden game's 5th installment, which as usual has a tactician in it, and I just realized that how mentally depressing it is to be one. Other than needing to gifted in tactics, be aware of political atmosphere, general knowledge (signs), to possess leadership and integrity, they always have to make tough decisions.
With every decisions made, you treat people like pawns: bloodshed and sacrifices are nothing uncommon. One mistake more people die, One brilliant plan, less people die but people still die. Which is probably why a lot of times, the experienced tactician always refuses to be recruited. Reasons like to atone for their sins or that they don't want more people die out of their decisions.
It's quite a shame that I am very slow to notice this point; the point behind admiring tacticians should not be limited to the mere fact that they are intellects or even geniuses. But also because they have this ability for godly difficult decision making.
